SFI vs FIA Racing Suit Ratings Explained

Two standards, two regions

SFI Foundation standards are widely used across North American motorsport sanctioning bodies, while FIA standards are the reference point for most international and European competition. Buyers sourcing racewear for a specific market need to confirm which standard their sanctioning body actually requires before specifying a suit.

What the rating actually covers

Both systems rate a suit's fire protection based on layer construction and testing — but the test methods, layer requirements and homologation processes differ. A suit built to one standard is not automatically compliant with the other.

What this means for sourcing

When you request a custom suit, specify the exact standard and rating your market or series requires (for example, SFI 3.2A/5). A reputable manufacturer will confirm whether that specification can be met and what documentation accompanies the finished product — rather than making a blanket certification claim across an entire product line.
